The World | IN BRIEF / FRANCE

May 17, 2004|From Times Wire Reports

Thousands of French activists, artists and politicians protested against anti-Semitism in Paris after the desecration of two Jewish cemeteries and a rise in attacks on Jewish people and property.

Human rights groups, backed by France's main Jewish body, hastily organized two marches after swastikas were daubed on tombstones in an Alsatian cemetery and on graves of Jewish soldiers near the World War I trenches of Verdun.

Organizers estimated the turnout at 20,000, while police reported 9,000.
