Chechen Leader Backed by Moscow Is Sworn In
Under heavy guard, Maj. Gen. Alu Alkhanov was sworn in as Chechnya's new Kremlin-backed president, nearly five months after his predecessor was assassinated.
He was elected Aug. 29 in the war-torn Russian republic in a vote that critics called rigged. He was inaugurated in a tent inside the government complex in the Chechen capital, Grozny.
