September 05, 2004|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Kay-Jay Harris rushed for a school-record 337 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 10 West Virginia to a 56-23 victory over East Carolina on Saturday night at Morgantown, W.Va.

Harris broke the school record of 291 yards set by Kerry Marbury in 1971 against Temple. It also was a Big East Conference record, eclipsing the mark of 299 set by Miami's Edgerrin James in 1998 against UCLA.

Jason Colson had two touchdowns as West Virginia's platoon rushing attack continued the Mountaineers' recent dominance of East Carolina in the opener for both teams.

The Mountaineers gained 478 yards on the ground. In the two previous seasons, they ran for 361 and a Big East-record 536 against the Pirates.

In another game involving a Big East team, Dan Orlovsky threw for 382 yards and tied his own school record with five touchdown passes to lead Connecticut to a 52-14 win over Murray State at East Hartford, Conn. Orlovsky threw scoring passes of 34, 40, 31, 80 and 61 yards to match the record, which he set last year in a win over Army. Two of the touchdowns went to Jason Williams, including the 80-yarder, the fifth-longest in school history.

DeWhitt Betterson rushed for the go-ahead touchdown and Troy's defense held Marshall to 177 total yards in a 17-15 victory at Huntington, W.Va. The anemic offensive production by Marshall was its lowest since 1989. It was only the seventh loss Marshall has had at home since it opened its stadium in 1991, and its first season-opening home loss since 1977.... Ryan Hawk passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and Kalvin McRae ran for 100 yards and scored twice to lead Ohio to a 42-14 victory over Virginia Military Institute at Athens, Ohio. Justin Roush had 130 yards rushing for the Bobcats, who also got two defensive touchdowns. T.J. Wright scored on a 41-yard interception return and Tyler Russ returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown.

Michael Franklin had a 67-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage and Matt Dlugolecki threw for two touchdowns to lead San Diego State to a 38-21 win over visiting Idaho State, a Division I-AA school. Robert Ortiz caught two touchdown passes for the Aztecs.... Corey Bramlet threw for two touchdowns and 239 yards in his first career start and Wyoming rolled to a 53-7 victory over Division I-AA Appalachian State at Laramie, Wyo.

Jared Zabransky rushed for three touchdowns and threw for 234 yards to lead Boise State to a 65-7 victory over visiting Idaho in the opener for both. Zabransky completed 11 of 16 passes and Chris Carr returned a punt 62 yards as Boise State won its 12th game in a row, the longest streak in Division I-A.

Ben Buys rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns, including one with 57 seconds left, to lead host Azusa Pacific to a 24-17 victory over San Diego.... Phillip Craig rushed for 145 yards in 21 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead La Verne to a 26-21 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in a SCIAC game at La Verne. Gabe Segovia's interception in the final minute clinched the victory.... Darrell Jones had four receptions for 151 yards to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to a 42-7 victory over visiting Humboldt State.
