Suit Alleges Religious Discrimination at MTA

Los Angeles | IN BRIEF / LOS ANGELES

September 17, 2004|From Times Staff Reports

The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit Thursday against the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, alleging a pattern of religious discrimination against employees.

The suit claims that the agency discriminated against a Jewish employee by refusing to accommodate the worker's observation of the Sabbath. The MTA, the suit said, requires workers to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week -- a requirement that conflicts with the plaintiff's ability to observe his faith by not working between Friday and Saturday evenings.
