Moorpark Man Is Held in Beating of Girlfriend, 25

September 17, 2004|From a Times Staff Writer

A Moorpark man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder in the beating of his girlfriend. Police believe a baseball bat was used.

Witnesses at an apartment complex at 51 Majestic Court told authorities they heard a violent argument just after midnight and later saw Matthew Taylor, 31, wielding a baseball bat.

When Ventura County sheriff's deputies arrived, they found Jamie Masters, 25, sitting on the ground with multiple cuts on her head. Masters also had several broken bones in her arms and hands, authorities said.

Taylor was found nearby and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence, authorities said. A baseball bat was recovered, police said.

Taylor was booked at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. His arraignment was set for Monday.

Masters was in serious condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, a hospital spokeswoman said.
