September 19, 2004|Jane Engle

The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, displaying about 8,000 baskets, pots, beadwork and other items, opens Tuesday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The museum is designed to tell Native Americans' history from their perspectives. The core of the 800,000-object collection was gathered by late New York banker George Gustav Heye in the early 20th century. The museum will be open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, except Dec. 25. Call (202) 633-1000 or see www.AmericanIndian.si.edu.
