Fraud Probes Familiar to Postal Inspectors

September 26, 2004

"FBI Shift Crimps White- Collar Crime Probes" (Aug. 30) accurately describes the challenges the FBI faces investigating white-collar crime when counter-terrorism has become a priority.

It fails to mention, however, that other federal agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service and the Postal Inspection Service, have historically conducted white- collar investigations, independently and in partnership with the FBI.

The article mentioned how the Postal Inspection Service "helped fill the gap by moving experienced agents back into fraud work."

In the last two years, Los Angeles postal inspectors have investigated more than 40 significant fraud cases.
