House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert had kidney stone surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital, forcing him to cancel a trip to Rome for Pope John Paul II's funeral.
Hastert's spokesman, Ron Bonjean, said the 63-year-old Illinois Republican was recovering well and was expected to return home on Friday.
