Parliament Accepts President's Resignation

Parliament accepted the resignation of ousted President Askar A. Akayev, formally ending his 15-year rule in Kyrgyzstan and paving the way for the election of a new leader. It set the vote for July 10.

After opposition supporters stormed his office March 24, Akayev fled to Russia, where he signed his resignation last week. Legislators voted 38 to 2 to accept.
