August 26, 2005|From Times Wire Reports

Syria has refused to turn over documents and ignored interview requests in the U.N. investigation of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a top U.N. official said.

German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, chief of the inquiry, believes that the Syrian silence has "considerably slowed down" the investigation, Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari told the Security Council.
