IN BRIEF/NORTHERN IRELAND

Queen Elizabeth Meets With Irish President

December 09, 2005|From Times Wire Reports

Queen Elizabeth II and Irish President Mary McAleese shook hands on Northern Ireland soil, the first British monarch and Irish leader to do so.

The two chatted and posed together at Hillsborough Castle outside Belfast.

The meeting fueled speculation that the queen could make her first official visit to Ireland, which no British monarch has visited since 1911.

Ireland dropped its territorial claim to Northern Ireland as part of a 1998 peace accord.
