IN BRIEF / ZIMBABWE

July 06, 2005|From Times Wire Reports

Zimbabwe's paramilitary police swept through a Harare township, pulling down more than 100 prefabricated wooden cabins, including one with screaming children inside, witnesses and opposition activists said. The children escaped.

Monday's raid took place despite promises that police were winding down the so-called urban renewal drive that has destroyed the homes and livelihoods of more than 100,000 people.
