The election in the city of Los Angeles is Tuesday. The race for mayor has received the most attention, but eight City Council district races will also be decided.
A mayoral candidate must get more than 50% of the vote to win. Otherwise, the two who receive the most votes will compete in a run-off election May 17.
Those who have not yet registered for next week's election cannot vote Tuesday; they will have until May 2 to register for the run-off. To request a registration form by mail, call (800) 481-8683. Online voter registration is available at the California secretary of state website: www. ss.ca.gov/elections/votereg1. html.
There also are municipal elections Tuesday in 35 other Los Angeles County cities.
