IN BRIEF / KYRGYZSTAN

March 14, 2005|From Times Wire Reports

Voters in Kyrgyzstan cast ballots in runoff elections for 43 of the 75 seats in parliament, but opposition groups and monitors alleged fraud. Preliminary results were expected today.

Edil Baisalov, head of the coalition of civic groups called For Democracy and Civil Society that monitored the vote, said the runoffs were worse than the first round, marred by open and widespread vote-buying and obstruction of election observers. He said voters were bused in to some polling stations.
