LETTERS TO THE TIMES

A Barrier Would Harm the Golden Gate Bridge

May 29, 2005

Re "A Jump Survivor's Bridge to Activism," May 23: It is regrettable that a person is forced by mental breakdown to extreme measures such as suicide, but it is nonsense and there is no justification to erect a barrier around such a munificent piece of engineering as the Golden Gate Bridge.

People use guns to commit suicide: What, ban guns totally? Should we ban trains because people throw themselves in front of trains, or ban stoves because people turn on the gas and kill themselves?

One cannot place a barrier without structurally compromising the integrity of the Golden Gate Bridge.
