Official Fired in Iraq Oil Inquiry Is Reinstated

November 16, 2005|From Times Wire Reports

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan reversed his decision to fire a key official in the Iraq oil-for-food probe, the United Nations said.

Annan's decision came after a U.N. appeals panel exonerated Joseph J. Stephanides in a ruling disclosed last week.

The oil-for-food program allowed Saddam Hussein's regime to sell oil to buy humanitarian goods such as food and medicine. It later became embroiled in allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
