Forces Crack Down in Violence-Racked City

October 19, 2005

Security forces sealed off parts of the southern Russian city of Nalchik after shooting erupted during their search for suspected militants in the wake of violence last week that left at least 139 people dead, including more than 90 attackers.

The regional Interior Ministry told people to carry their identity documents, submit to body searches and obey police commands to stop their cars.

Russian news agencies reported that police had killed a man during a document check. Interfax quoted the Interior Ministry as saying he had taken part in the attacks.
