Al Qaeda Says It Was Behind London Attacks

Al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman Zawahiri said in a tape broadcast by Al Jazeera television that his terrorist network had carried out the July 7 London bombings.

The attacks killed 52 people along with the four bombers. There was no way to verify Zawahiri's claim.

In a broadcast earlier this month, he said the bombings were a response to Britain's foreign policies and its rejection of a truce Al Qaeda offered in 2004. That tape did not directly claim responsibility for the killings.
