LAPD May Sweeten Pensions for New Hires
Police Chief William J. Bratton proposed Wednesday to allow officers who leave other law enforcement agencies or the military for the Los Angeles Police Department to buy up to five years’ service credit toward their pensions.
A problem in attracting officers from other agencies is that their pension systems are not transferable, officials said.
The proposed program, which would need City Council approval, would allow officers to use benefits from former jobs to buy service credit if they work for the LAPD for at least 20 years.
