Avery Lands Gig on Canadian TV

April 18, 2006|Chris Foster

Sean Avery, the 26-year-old forward whom the Kings removed from their dressing room last week, will be covering the Stanley Cup playoffs as a commentator for Sportsnet, a Canadian cable network.

Avery will provide in-studio commentary for the first week of the playoffs, and his contract could be extended. That might hinge on his being able to curtail his shoot-from-the-lip personality. Avery's last public utterance was an obscenity-laced tirade directed at Brian Hayward, a television commentator for the Mighty Ducks and NBC.

The Kings and Avery appeared to part ways after his argument with assistant coach Mark Hardy last Wednesday. He is a restricted free agent but could become unrestricted if the Kings do not give him a qualifying offer.

Avery could not be reached for comment.
