Sakic Lifts Avalanche

Joe Sakic scored 4:36 into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 5-4 victory over the host Dallas Stars on Monday night for a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Sakic tipped John-Michael Liles' slap shot from the point past goalie Marty Turco seconds after Dallas' Jason Arnott hit the post at the other end.

After blowing a 3-0 first-period lead, Colorado forced overtime when Brett Clark scored a short-handed goal with 2:04 left in the third period.

New Jersey 4, New York Rangers 1 -- John Madden tied an NHL playoff record with two short-handed goals and finished with his first postseason hat trick to lead the Devils to a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference series at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Rangers played without injured forward Jaromir Jagr and defenseman Darius Kasparaitis, and goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who was benched in favor of Kevin Weekes.

Montreal 6, Carolina 5 -- Michael Ryder scored 2:32 into the second overtime to give the Canadiens a victory over the Hurricanes at Raleigh, N.C., and a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference series.

Buffalo 8, Philadelphia 2 -- J.P. Dumont and Jason Pominville each had three goals and an assist at Buffalo, N.Y., to help the Sabres take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference series.
