Citing widespread power outages during California's heat wave last month, Public Utilities Commission President Michael R. Peevey ordered Southern California Edison Co. to add 250 megawatts of power generation by next summer.
The utility, a unit of Edison International of Rosemead, also was told to expand by 300 megawatts its program that gives customers rate breaks for allowing Edison to shut down their air conditioners at times of high use. Currently, Edison can cut about 400 megawatts of power use by turning off air conditioners.
