THE WORLD | IN BRIEF / CHAD

August 27, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

President Idriss Deby ordered oil companies Chevron Corp. and Petronas to leave the country, saying neither has paid taxes and the government would take over the oil fields that account for 60% of the nation's production.

He said on state-run radio that the companies, part of a consortium led by Exxon Mobil Corp., had 24 hours to start making plans to leave. Chevron denied that it was behind in taxes or had been ordered to leave.
