Helping the needy get basic nutrition

December 02, 2006

Re "Filling empty stomachs in U.S. a growing challenge," Nov. 26

This article highlights the growing challenge of fighting hunger in Michigan but makes no mention of Southern California. Although the L.A. Regional Foodbank distributed 41 million pounds of food and products last year, the 1,000 charitable agency sites that we serve report the need for 10 million additional pounds to meet the demand throughout Los Angeles County.

Hunger remains a largely hidden problem affecting 35 million Americans and 1 million residents in L.A. County. Unless children, adults and seniors get the basic nutrition they need, the essential threads that hold our society together will fray.
