3rd suspect detained in Camarillo man's death

A 19-year-old sailor has been identified as the third suspect in the fatal shooting of a Camarillo man whose ex-wife is among Navy personnel implicated in the crime, authorities said Tuesday.

Seabee Matthew Gerald Toerner was stationed at Naval Base Ventura County on Dec. 1 when John Marmo Jr., 27, was shot outside his condominium. Two days later, Toerner shipped out to Okinawa with Naval Mobile Construction 3rd Battalion.

Toerner is being detained there by military police while arrangements are made to return him to Ventura County.

On Dec. 5, Rebecca Braswell, 26, the victim's former spouse, and Braswell's friend, Shannon Butler, 24, were arrested in connection with Marmo's slaying. The two Navy mechanics remain in Ventura County main jail on bail of $1 million each.

Seth Hardy, 20, a builder apprentice with the Seabees, was also arrested and charged with placing explosive devices Oct. 14 and Oct. 28 in an attempt to kill Marmo. Hardy, who is being held on $510,000 bail, was not charged in the shooting.

Braswell and Marmo, who divorced in January 2005, were engaged in a contentious child custody dispute regarding their 4-year-old daughter, Heather.
