LAPD at State Lines for 'Bum Blockade'

TIMES PAST: FEB. 4, 1936

February 04, 2006

The Los Angeles Police Department launched a foreign excursion of sorts, heading to the California border for a "Bum Blockade." The LAPD deployed 136 officers to 16 major points of entry on the Arizona, Nevada and Oregon lines, with orders to turn back migrants with "no visible means of support." Six days later, "Hoboes of America" threatened to sue the LAPD after police prevented 1,000 people from Dust Bowl-ravaged states from entering California.
