Dick Harmon, 58, part of golf's most noted teaching family and the son of former Masters champion Claude Harmon, died Friday at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif.. The cause of death was not disclosed.
"It's hard to believe," Butch Harmon, eldest of the four Harmon brothers, told Golfweek.com. "It just came out of the blue. He was fine last night and gone this morning."
Dick Harmon had recently been teaching at his golf school at Redstone Country Club near Houston. Among his clients were Masters champions Fred Couples and Craig Stadler and former PGA champion Lanny Wadkins.
"I didn't think there was a better short-game teacher than Dick," Wadkins told Golfweek.
Harmon, who had played on the golf team at San Diego State, was the teaching pro at Houston's River Oaks Country Club for 24 years, retiring five years ago. He was recognized as one of the top 50 golf teachers by Golf Digest and Golf magazine.
