Jan. 21-March 12: Renoir's "Girl Crocheting" -- unseen outside Massachusetts since 1946 -- appears alongside with 11 other major paintings by Monet ("Duck Pond" and "Spring in Giverny"), Degas, Pissarro, Manet, Sisley and Morisot in the exhibition "Collecting the Impressionists: Masterpieces From the Sterling and Francine Clark Institute" at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Jan. 26-29: Now, mush! Thirty teams will race to complete the first five-mile stage of the 11th Pedigree International Stage Stop Sled Dog Race on Jan. 27 at the Jackson Hole Winter Carnival. After the dogs finish, visitors can meet the mushers at a free torchlight parade and party. On Jan. 28, competitive ski races are open to everyone. Other activities include musical and comedic performances and wine and chocolate tasting.

San Diego

Opens Jan. 28: The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center examines how NASA's work in space, technological developments from the agency's missions and discoveries from the Hubble Telescope have affected our everyday lives in "NASA Accomplishments: In Space and on Earth."

Snowbird, Utah

Feb. 1-5: Athletes will add James Bond-style thrills during the U.S. Freeskiing Nationals. Competitors race down daredevil courses "jumping cliffs, doing tricks and looking good," said Snowbird spokeswoman Laura Schaffer. Event attendance is free, but spectators need a lift ticket and intermediate skiing skills to reach the mountain's venues.
