California Law Firms Are Raising Salaries

January 13, 2006|From Bloomberg News

Several California corporate law firms are raising pay for their salaried lawyers for the first time since 2000, putting pressure on New York competitors.

At Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, base pay for first-year salaried lawyers, called associates, will rise to $135,000 from $125,000 in California and Washington, D.C., the firm told its associates in a memo Tuesday.

The raises solidify California's reputation as the pacesetter for first-year associates' pay.

Top New York firms are still paying first-year associates $125,000.
