Officer Wounded by Son Still in Critical Condition

A Los Angeles police officer remained in critical condition Wednesday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a day after he was shot in the back by his 3-year-old son in the family's pickup.

Enrique Chavez, a 10-year veteran and Anaheim resident, was off duty and waiting at a traffic light at La Palma Avenue and Harbor Boulevard when he was shot once by the boy, who was in the backseat. Police have not determined how the boy obtained Chavez's 9-millimeter service weapon, said Sgt. Rick Martinez.
