Chavez's popularity

July 20, 2006

Re "In Venezuela, Chavez's Rivals Plan a Team Effort," June 17

After visiting Venezuela last January, I was struck that many people of little means were beginning to benefit from the oil revenues of this resource-laden country. The strongest opposition to this social change comes from the former elite.

What most people in the U.S. fail to understand is that because of his overwhelming popularity among the working class, President Hugo Chavez represents the majority in his country. The opposition could benefit from a more united voice, but it must speak for more than just the needs of the privileged minority if it ever hopes to win popular support.
