President Lashes Out at Catholic Church Leaders

July 28, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

President Evo Morales questioned the power of the Roman Catholic Church in Bolivia, saying its leaders were being manipulated by elites who had "historically damaged the country."

Morales, a leftist and the nation's first indigenous president, had vowed to end centuries of discrimination against the poor Indian majority by a European-descended elite.

In a TV interview, Morales accused church leaders of being "an instrument of the oligarchs."
