Government Forces, Rebels Clash in East

IN BRIEF / CHAD

March 22, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

Heavy fighting has erupted in eastern Chad, where rebels have been massing for months in a bid to overthrow President Idriss Deby, Communications Minister Hourmadji Moussa Doumngor said.

Deby and his security aides are in eastern Chad to direct military operations against the rebels, Doumngor said. The struggle for power threatens to destabilize efforts to end a civil war in neighboring Sudan's Darfur region, which borders the site of the Chadian battles.
