Good students get some press

LETTERS

May 06, 2006

I retired from high school teaching six years ago and since then spend much more time each day reading newspapers replete with stories of teenagers failing competency tests, abusing drugs and committing violent acts. Where are all those wonderful kids I spent my time with in 40-plus years of teaching?

I found them in Patrick Goldstein's "summer movie posse" ["Meet the Deciders," May 2]. What articulate and intelligent comments those students made -- and what a pleasure it must be to teach kids with so much insight and enthusiasm. Thanks, Patrick Goldstein and teacher Lori E. Pike, for reminding me those young people are still around, despite so much in recent news to the contrary.
