U.S. Soldier Killed in Battle With Insurgents

An American soldier was killed and six were wounded in a battle with insurgents in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said today.

The soldier was killed in the southern province of Oruzgan.

U.S.-led coalition officials lauded Afghan security forces for repelling Taliban militants in fierce fighting this week. "We see this as them taking control of the situation," said a military spokesman, Canadian Maj. Quentin Innis.

Violence in southern Afghanistan this week left as many as 120 people dead.
