Explosion of Aerosol Burns 3 Teenagers in Car

May 21, 2006|From Times Staff Reports

A 15-year-old girl was burned on her face, back and arms early Saturday when a fireball ignited in a parked car where she and two boys were inhaling aerosol spray, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

The girl suffered critical burns to 27% of her body, said Jim Wells, fire department spokesman. She was in critical condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Two boys -- 16 and 17 -- suffered lesser burns and were sent to Glendale Memorial Hospital Health Center.

Before 2 a.m., one of the youths had lighted some smoking material, which ignited vapors from the aerosol spray. Firefighters arrived to find the youths screaming for help inside the car.
