97 Fishermen From Vietnam Are Rescued

May 21, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

A Chinese rescue ship saved 97 Vietnamese fishermen in the South China Sea and continued to search for other Vietnamese missing in the wake of Typhoon Chanchu, the official New China News Agency reported.

The rescue ship also recovered 18 bodies. It was unclear whether the 97 fishermen were among almost 200 whose vessels sank and who were reported missing and presumed dead by authorities in the Vietnamese port city of Danang.

Responding to a request from Vietnam, China dispatched the vessel Nanhaijiu 111 to Dongsha Island, the report said.
