Lonergan's film and play conflict

Playwright-director Kenneth Lonergan has run into a scheduling conflict -- with himself.

Due to delays in Lonergan's production schedule on a film, the pre-Broadway staging of his new play "The Starry Messenger," scheduled for Jan. 18 to Feb. 18 at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, has been postponed indefinitely. Lonergan had also been scheduled to direct the play, and Matthew Broderick had been cast to star in the production.

The Old Globe announced Wednesday that "Starry Messenger" will be replaced by the new musical "Ace," with book and lyrics by Robert Taylor and Richard Oberacker and music by Oberacker. The show will be directed by Stafford Arima.

"Ace" tells the story of three generations of families and pays tribute to the sacrifices of aviation heroes of World Wars I and II.
