Infection puts Sharon in intensive care unit

TEL AVIV — Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was in intensive care Friday for an infection in his heart, raising new concerns about his survival 10 months after he fell into a coma after a stroke.

The hospital said his condition had deteriorated but stabilized.

Experts have said that because of the severity of his stroke, Sharon, prime minister from 2001 to 2006, is unlikely to recover.

Sharon, 78, has undergone several extensive brain operations to stop cerebral hemorrhaging, in addition to some minor procedures.
