Beached whales helped into sea

November 10, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

Refinery workers and volunteers refloated 40 beached pilot whales in northern New Zealand today, but 37 others died on the beach, a Conservation Department spokeswoman said.

About 70 volunteers and 15 department staffers were standing by in case the whales turned back toward shore or began to swim into nearby Whangarei Harbor, on North Island, Sue Campbell said.
