Kurdish Separatists Call for a Cease-Fire in War

THE WORLD | IN BRIEF / TURKEY

October 01, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

A Kurdish guerrilla group declared a new unilateral cease-fire in its war for autonomy in Turkey's southeast, heeding a call from its imprisoned rebel leader, a pro-Kurdish news agency said.

The Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, said the cease-fire would go into effect today "in the hopes of starting a democratic process for the solution of the Kurdish problem," the Firat news agency said on its website.

The Turkish government has ignored previous cease-fires by the group, saying it does not negotiate with terrorists.
