`Frontline' tracks Taliban's return

October 03, 2006|Paul Brownfield | Times Staff Writer

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, pushing his memoir, "In the Line of Fire," was a guest last week on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" -- a surreal warmup to the harder-hitting "Return of the Taliban," on PBS at 9 tonight.

The "Frontline" documentary explores how the Taliban, having been routed from Afghanistan five years ago, have retrenched in Pakistan, the putative U.S. ally.

There's kind of a naked moment when President Bush, visiting Musharraf in Islamabad in March, declares himself satisfied that the Pakistani president "understands the need to make sure our strategy is able to defeat the enemy." Bush looks at Musharraf, the men framed behind lecterns at the presidential palace. "Do you want to say something to that?" Bush finally asks.
