Military Deaths

September 10, 2006

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq and Kuwait or who died at a military hospital of their injuries:

Eugene H.E. Alex, 32, of Bay City, Mich.; staff sergeant, Army. Alex died Sept. 2 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany of injuries suffered Aug. 30 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Edwin A. Andino II, 23, of Culpeper, Va.; private, Army. Andino was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Wurzburg, Germany.

Michael L. Deason, 28, of Farmington, Mo.; staff sergeant, Army. Deason was killed Aug. 31 when an armor-piercing grenade struck his Humvee in Ad War, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Germaine L. Debro, 33, of Omaha; sergeant, Army National Guard. Debro was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 167th Cavalry Regiment, Army National Guard in Fremont, Neb.

Justin W. Dreese, 21, of Northumberland, Pa.; private first class, Army. Dreese was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 2 by mortar fire while on foot patrol in Yusifiya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Vincent M. Frassetto, 21, of Toms River, N.J.; private first class, Marine Corps. Frassetto was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy vehicle in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Cliff K. Golla, 21, of Charlotte, N.C.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Golla was killed Sept. 1 when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

David W. Gordon, 23, of Williamsfield, Ohio; sergeant, Army. Gordon was killed Friday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Marshall A. Gutierrez, 41, of Las Vegas, N.M.; lieutenant colonel, Army. Gutierrez died of noncombat-related injuries Monday at Camp Virginia, Kuwait. He was assigned to the Area Support Group in Arijan, Kuwait.

Shane P. Harris, 23, of Las Vegas, N.M.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Harris was killed Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Richard J. Henkes II, 32, of Portland, Ore.; sergeant first class, Army. Henkes was killed Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Philip A. Johnson, 19, of Hartford, Conn.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Johnson was killed Sept. 3 in a roadside attack in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Nicholas A. Madaras, 19, of

Wilton, Conn.; private first class, Army. Madaras was killed Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near him while on foot patrol in Baqubah, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Hannah L. McKinney, 20, of Redlands; private first class, Army. McKinney was killed Monday in a noncombat-related vehicle accident in Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. She was assigned to the 542nd Maintenance Company, 44th Corps Support Battalion at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Angel D. Mercado-Velazquez, 24, of Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico; staff sergeant, Army. Mercado-Velazquez was killed Sept. 1 by mortar fire while on foot patrol in Yusifiya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Jason L. Merrill, 22, of Mesa, Ariz.; sergeant, Army. Merrill was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Wurzburg, Germany.
