Islamists Silence Radio Outlet for Playing Music

September 11, 2006|From Times Wire Reports

Islamic militants controlling much of southern Somalia shut down a radio station for playing love songs and other music, the latest step to impose strict religious rule that has sparked fears of a Taliban-style regime.

Since sweeping to power over much of southern Somalia, the Islamists have banned movie viewing, shut down some public broadcasts of World Cup soccer matches and broken up a wedding celebration because women and men were socializing.

The station was the only one serving the town of Jawhar, 60 miles north of Mogadishu, the nominal capital.
