Mauceri will return to the Bowl, with the new title of founding director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, although dates haven't been announced. Even so, things will never be the same. So expect some hugs this weekend from his guests, Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, members of the Joffrey Ballet and famed Muppets Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
Mauceri said he will pursue his new job on two fronts.
"There's the education that goes on within the school, and there's the education of the public about the arts," he says. "So there are two kinds of education and two schools. One is the one in Winston-Salem and the other is the school called Earth."
He wants to update the Winston-Salem school in terms of technology. The other focus is on reaching the public.
"The larger educational goal is simply to empower people or allow people to accept the reality of the arts in everything we do, that they're not something separate, not something people don't understand.
"I firmly believe that greatness in music has to do with the ability of music in performance to open the door for people into some eternal line of communication. That ability to have us enter into something that unites us is, I think, the capacity of music to be great. That's what actual music is. Music is below audibility. What we call music is the excuse for us to get together and experience that."
