Man's Explosives-Filled RV a Bluff, Police Find

September 19, 2006|From Times Staff Reports

A 52-year-old man who said he had filled his motor home with explosives delayed train service in Orange and disrupted a nearby elementary school as he held off authorities for five hours, police said.

Law enforcement officers used tear gas to force out the Lake Elsinore man about 11:30 a.m. and discovered he was bluffing.

The man was detained and taken to a hospital to evaluate whether he was competent to be charged with felony criminal threats, said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

Metrolink trains passing Orange Olive Road at Buena Vista Avenue were delayed. Students at Olive Elementary School were moved to a safer part of campus, Amormino said.
