Militants Advance on Port City of Kismayo

Islamist vehicles moved closer to the strategic Somali port of Kismayo, local officials said, but the Conservative Council of Islamic Courts denied any attempt to seize the city.

Kismayo residents braced for a possible attack by the forces that took control of Mogadishu in June.

In addition to the capital, the Islamists took a swath of southern Somalia earlier this year.
