THE WORLD

September 25, 2006|From Times Wire Services

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Government and military officials Sunday denied rumors of a coup attempt against President Pervez Musharraf while he was visiting the United States.

Journalists were inundated with telephone calls and text messages asking about the rumors, which coincided with a widespread power outage.

Pakistani Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durrani, who is traveling with Musharraf in New York, told Reuters: "These rumors were sparked by the power breakdown. These are baseless.

"These rumors spread because televisions were off and telephones were on."

A military official who declined to be identified said, "It's totally rubbish."
