Nation Remembers 1941 Babi Yar Victims

Bells gently tolled as Ukrainian and foreign dignitaries commemorated the 65th anniversary of the Nazi massacre of Jews at a ravine known as Babi Yar on Kiev's outskirts, placing flower-encircled candles at the foot of a giant monument.

At least 33,771 people were killed in 48 hours. In the following months the number topped 100,000.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and Israeli President Moshe Katsav led the solemn procession behind an honor guard of Ukrainian soldiers carrying a garland of white flowers.

Hundreds of mourners watched, many of them Jews who had traveled from around the world.
