BOB MIESZERSKI’S DEL MAR HANDICAP
For Monday, Aug. 13. Post Time 2 p.m.
First Race – 1 mile, 4-year-olds & up, fillies & mares, top claiming price $32,000, purse $42,000.
Comments: GET THE MONEY goes first off the claim for Jeff Mullins and is up a level and gets a jockey change to Michael Baze. The barn is deadly with recent purchases, and she should get a ground-saving trip as she tries a new game. YEARLY ATTITUDE wired lesser in her first of the meet for Bill Spawr and is a threat from up close again as she is up a peg. She has strung victories together in the past. YOUR QUOTE, also trained by Mullins claim, won by daylight as the lukewarm choice and likes the Polytrack, but can she route? Her earlier efforts around two turns have not been good.
Longshot: WILDOUT
Second Race – 5 furlongs on turf, 3-year-olds & up, allowance/claiming, claiming price $40,000, purse $59,000.
Comments: MEDZENDEEKRON is back on the grass, his preferred surface, for Barry Abrams and did win over this layout – albeit routing – last year. The son of Unusual Heat showed he could sprint at Hollywood Park, scoring impressively on June 10 before a wasted effort on the Cushion Track. KAPALUA BAY finished second in his grass debut on July 25 and could benefit from a race over the layout for Ron Ellis. GLOBAL HEAT won at 7-1 on the Poly on July 21 and is proven over the lawn for Darrell Vienna. The son of Future Storm won down the hill earlier in the year at ‘Anita.
Longshot: GARRISON
Third Race – 6 furlongs, 2-year-old maiden fillies, top claiming price $32,000, purse $23,000.
Comments: YODELFEST adds the blinkers and drops into a claimer for the first time for Mike Harrington and should find these more to her liking. She switches to apprentice Alonso Quinonez, who has demonstrated ability since arriving on this circuit from Kentucky. HAPPYTODANCWITHYOU finished a distant second in his first for Spawr and the move to the outside post could work in her favor. OUR STORM is a first-time starter by Gulf Storm, who is a son of Storm Cat, who has worked OK for Mullins and she won’t have to be anything special to make her presence felt in the pick six opener.
Longshot: ONGOING
Fourth Race – 6 furlongs, 4-year-olds & up, fillies & mares, top claiming price $10,000, purse $17,000.
Comments: I’MLADYTAK disappointed in a pair of races at Hollywood Park after being claimed by Frank Monteleone but deserves another chance with the switch to the Poly, and it is encouraging that the barn’s main man (Victor Espinoza) takes the call. Tab in a race that could fall a number of ways. KELLY CARSON is a win type (seven for 21) who is dropping after a claim by Doug O’Neill. The pattern is not a healthy one, but she might reach for some of her old class and beat a field like this one. RUN FOR DESSERT is better around one turn and could improve on the two-level drop for Ruben Cardenas. She won by daylight for this tag the day (April 25) she was claimed by these connections.
Longshot: BRIDLED HONEY
Fifth Race – 7 furlongs, 3-year-olds & up, maidens, top claiming price $50,000, purse $29,000.
Comments: HEYORE had a very rough trip in his debut on July 27 and did well to finish as close as he did. The gelding is drawn outside again as he debuts for Jerry Hollendorfer after a claim and keeps Michael Baze. He worked in 47 4/5 since raced, so let’s hope for a clear journey for the son of Old Topper. MIDNIGHTER missed by half a length when third as the chalk in his first of the meet on July 19 and cuts back in distance as he debuts for the hot owner-trainer combo of John Liviakis and Melody Conlon. The connections have done well this year with a limited number of claims, so expecting this guy to run well and to be bet heavily because his owner likes to send in the cash. SPANISH BANDIT finished a nose in front of the top choice in a route and should be right there at this shorter trip for Art Sherman.
Longshot: PRESS RELEASE
Sixth Race – 1 mile on turf, 3-year-olds, top claiming price $62,500, purse $58,000.
Comments: HOIST THE SAIL drops into an easier spot for Chuck Peery after having his number taken down – he finished fourth and was placed seventh – in his Del Mar turf debut on July 20 and should be more effective in this context. He also gets a new rider in Espinoza. JUSTINPLACE is two for four on the lawn for Paul Aguirre and is an obvious contender right back but gets a negative post switch. He had the two hole when winning last month at Hollypark but is marooned near the outside this time. FANDABIDOO showed some late spunk in his sprint bow over this course and will be a factor if he can route for John Sadler. The gray was seventh in his only other route on the lawn, but that was in a minor stakes at the Meadowlands last fall.
Longshot: BLUEGRASS HILL
Seventh Race – 1 mile, 3-year-olds & up, allowance/claiming, claiming price $100,000, purse $75,000.
Comments: VISA PARADE ran well to be second in his first in this country in the Berkeley, a Grade III, on June 2 at Golden Gate Fields. He was close to a hot pace early and held on best of those involved as the race fell into the lap of longshot closer My Creed. The Argentine-bred has been first, second or thirdin nine of 10 lifetime and has trained well in the interim for John Sadler. RAILROAD finished second at this level in his first over the surface, and the hard trier always has to be respected for Brian Koriner. He’s been in the exacta in 17 of 31. WORCHESTER goes turf to Poly for Bobby Frankel and maybe he can become the latest to make a successful transition. Frankel did it earlier in the meet with Hello Sunday, who won the race RAILROAD exits.
Longshot: AMERICANREVOLUTION
Eighth Race – 6 furlongs, 3-year-olds & up, maiden fillies & mares, top claiming price $25,000, purse $20,000.
Comments: NUSHKA BABEE drops into a career soft spot for John Meairs and fits off either of her last two sprints at Hollywood Park. The stable won with monster longshot Echezeaux earlier in the meet. JUSTICE IS BRIEF puts the hood back on for O’Neill and drops, and the two changes could help the daughter of Lit De Justice. HAPPYHOURATHEBRIG is a 17-time loser for David La Croix who could find her way into the exotics if she gets to play.
